Summer is a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to weight loss.

Appetites can decrease due to the weather, it gets easier to eat salad, we move around more as we come out of our winter hibernation.

But it can also be easier to go off track as we have BBQ, increased opportunity for socialising and of course holidays and other getaways. We get called to eat loads of fab food, sit in beer gardens and eat our weight in ice creams before you know it, you've gained a few pounds.

I am going to give you 5 tips thought as to how you can keep weight loss a priority this summer.

Stay tuned until the end as the last one might surprise you.

So the summer!

It's funny isn't it how the seasons can affect our behaviors, especially around weight loss. I talked about this in a previous show when I gave tips on how to beat the winter sloth. Now I am here talking about summer. In winter we spend the winter saying we'll start afresh in the spring, then in the spring talk and the media shifts to getting a 'bikini body' for summer. It's a vicious cycle that can often leave us feeling like we're chasing our tail.

What if this doesn't have to be the case?

What if this summer is just the summer, what if you had a system which meant you could just adapt to the season of the year and the seasons of your life and continue to adapt so you can lose weight no matter the weather?

What if you could stay on track and even better what if you could find your own path to sustainable weight loss without restriction or feeling like you're missing out.

I have 5 tips for you to use this summer:

Plan ahead

One of the best ways to stay on track with your weight loss during the summer is to plan ahead. If you know you have a barbecue or party to attend, try to look up the menu in advance and use the 5 D's of action to make your decisions as to how you want to show up. Need the link to my 5 D's of Eating Out Video and show notes let me know by DM.

Maybe you are going on vacation, research the area for healthy eating options or if you are staying at a hotel with a fridge in the room, bring some healthy snacks and meals with you. Planning ahead will help you make better choices and avoid getting caught up in the moment and making choices that don't serve you or your weight loss.

You can also have a holiday protocol to serve as a guide e.g. can eat what I want as long as I am hungry, aim to do x lengths of the pool, no more than 2 ice creams or x number of drinks etc

The key is to get a balance, do what you enjoy but find a way to level up.

Set realistic process goals

When setting your weight loss goals for the summer, be realistic. If you set goals that are too lofty, you're likely to get discouraged and give up.

Instead, focus on setting smaller, more achievable goals that you can realistically reach. For example, rather than saying you want to lose 30 pounds by the end of summer, try making your goals around the process you will follow to get there e.g. I will aim to cook meals at home 5 nights a week or I will walk for 30 minutes every day. These types of goals are more likely to help you stay on track and reach your overall weight loss goals.

It is critical if you want sustainable weight loss that you get to know yourself well and watch out for your habits, triggers and cues to action so you can set realistic goals and achieve your dreams. Not sure where to start join the VIP membership and I can walk alongside you to get you started.

Aim for in-season food choices

In the Triple-A-Way I do not tell you what to eat or provide meal plans, I help you to figure out what works for you and how you can eat the foods you love without drama. This said if it is in season it means it is a whole food and whole foods won't often see you wrong in terms of your overall health. In-season food not only is tastier as it is 'in-season' but it can also be cheaper at times so given the bill situation at the moment this is something helpful to consider.

Some of the in-season fruits and vegetables for summer include tomatoes, watermelons, peaches, nectarines, apricots, berries, cherries, corn, courgette and cucumber.

Find activities you love to do to up your movement

The summer is a time when many activities become more readily available especially, for the fair-weather fanciers amongst us so maybe look at ways you get going outdoors more, such as walking, hiking, biking, yoga in the garden, and running.

There could be more local events to go to like fairs, live music in the park or entertainment that you can walk to. Why not add some fun and spice to your life by trying new things with friends or family to get active and creative, like badminton, or if you are by water, kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding.

Movement doesn't just involve formal gym work at the end of the day, plus the lighter nights and brighter days make us feel more energized and motivated to be active. So why not harness this summer power and subject to your body limits shake that bootay more.

Take time for yourself

I have been talking about how summer can be a busy time with vacations, barbecues, and social gatherings. These are all great and we want to do them of course but they can also zap our energy levels as we push ourselves to do it all.

Plus let's face it sometimes you need a holiday after a holiday depending on how the holiday pans out...am I right?

This is why it is still important to keep listening to your mind, body, and soul plus keeping up with working on your habit changes, self-development and self-care. It is easy to get fill your diary up and to then skip out on essential habits and practices that are great for your health and wellbeing, such as, mindfulness, journaling, and meditation.

But if you want to truly make the most of your summer, and stay on track with your weight loss goals, it's important that you take time for yourself. Make sure you schedule in some "me time" every day, even if it's just for a few minutes. This will help you stay focused on your goals and avoid getting overwhelmed.
