LISTEN TO THE PODCAST:

Do you work on your own self-development?

Maybe you think self-development is a waste of time and money.

That maybe there is no point and that it is easier to stay where you are

Maybe you think you are a bit long in the tooth to change or improve

Or maybe you think you simply do not have the time or money to invest in yourself.

It is certainly possible you are putting your own needs last and spending time and money on others.

But what if I told you that investing in yourself is one of the smartest decisions you will ever make?

What if I told you it could make you more money or save you more time. How it could enhance your relationships with others, with yourself and take your life from ordinary to exceptional would you want to know more?

Hopefully, as that is what I am talking about in this blog!

Self-development and investing in yourself is by far the smartest decision you will ever make! PERIOD.

When you work on your personal development, no matter how big or small you are essentially making an investment in yourself. Just like any other investment, there are risks and rewards associated with it.

The risks are usually things like getting out of your comfort zone, stepping outside of what is familiar to you and failing. These are all normal parts of the process and should not be viewed as roadblocks. They are actually good things!

The rewards, on the other hand, are things like increased confidence, improved relationships, and a greater sense of fulfilment and purpose.

Self-development is not a one-time event; it is a journey. Just like weight loss. And again just like weight loss there are many different ways to go about it, such as taking online courses, reading self-help books, memberships 😜, workshops, and retreats the list is endless.

What is self-development and why is it important

So how do I define self-development?

It is the process of growing and improving yourself.

You could do this by learning a new skills, developing new habits or attitudes, or increasing your knowledge.

Self-development is important because it helps you reach your full potential.

It allows you to be the best version of yourself, which in turn will lead to a more fulfilling and successful life.

When you invest in yourself, you are essentially making an investment in your future.

I can’t even begin to tell you how powerful my weight loss journey was for my self-development. I started off wanting to lose weight but found so much more.

I found a way to live that brought purpose and meaning to my life that I lost.

My story I think is similar to many women's. I hit 40 and it really made me think about what am I doing with my life. Where am I going? I had never been particularly driven and just bumbled through life. I went to uni because I didn’t know what I wanted to do as a job, got a job in HR as it came up and I got the job, got married, and had my daughter because this is what my concept of life was about. Ended up getting divorced etc and then hit 40. It was not that I wasn’t happy but it was just you know normal. My daughter was growing up and didn’t need me as much and I wanted a change, I wanted to shake things up a little.

It could have gone several ways at this point not gonna lie. Could have been a breakdown as I would have periods of being very stressed, could have hit the wine or food, or just continued as I was feeling like there was something adrift.

Thankfully for me, I found my weight loss mentor and it opened my eyes to the world of self-development, self-coaching and mindfulness. I have since done several courses, workshops, retreats, read several books and listened to podcasts and I have loved every minute of it and my life and weight has changed dramatically!

The benefits of self-development

The benefits of self-development…wow…where do I start!

There are many reasons why it is important to invest in yourself.

Firstly, when you work on yourself, for yourself you will gain so much personal power it is untrue! Each course, each book, each conversation becomes a shift of perspective, a new way of thinking and cumulatively can make a huge and I mean a huge difference to how you show up for life.

You will begin to see yourself, your life and the world around you in a completely different way.

Secondly, as you become more self-aware you will start to know what you want out of life and be able to create goals and plans to achieve these.

This is a biggie! It is easy to go through life without any direction or focus. I know as I was one of them. Just letting life take me along. I didn’t know what I wanted or how to get it or just assumed I couldn’t have it and so I didn’t try. I was just going through the motions day in, day out and it found like Groundhog Day.

There are so many other benefits and the point is the journey is yours, when you really embrace self-development and self-coaching you become the Captain of your ship. So the benefits are down to what you want them to be. The world of choice is literally your feet.

Maybe you want to become a more valuable asset to your employer or business. Get a promotion, get a raise or start a business. Through my self-development work I have done all of these. I have had times when I used to dread going to my day job. It was not the job that was the problem as the job was the job and I could have left if I hated it. In my case, it was my mindset but with the simple self-coaching tools I now I have and I am able to shift this about when I need to.

Maybe you want to lose weight. Sustained weight loss is not just about what you eat and how you move. It is about lifestyle and habit changes. Self-development and learning how to self-coach dramatically helps this.

How would it be to have a better relationship with your family, your partner, children etc? In my case, my relationship with my daughter has gone from strength to strength as I decided what relationship I wanted to have with her and made it happen. She also has seen me change, grow, develop and become a happier human being and this has rubbed off on her too. She is starting her GCSEs this week and I am beyond proud of her. She studies without me having to nag and I know she will smash them. But the best thing is her mindset. She has learnt from my journey the power of thoughts and has coached herself so she is going into them confidently and without worry 🥰

I could go on but basically, I create my reality and therefore I am now happier and more purposeful with my life.

How to get started on your own personal journey of self-development

I am conscious it can seem quite daunting to start your own personal journey of self-development, but it is definitely worth it!

10 Tips To Get You On Your Way.

1. Choose a focus area. It can be helpful to choose one particular area of your life to focus on, such as your career, weight loss, or relationships. This doesn’t mean you can’t work on the others but it is better if one is the focal point. Chances are the others will follow e.g. I worked on weight loss but out of it came, career enhancements and better relationships. I’d recommend joining my member and weight loss of course but if you are not sure leave me a hashtag wheel and I will send you a free tool that well help you figure it out.

2. Find resources. There are many different resources available to help you with self-development. These can include books, online courses, articles, podcasts, and more. Take some time to explore what is available and find resources that resonate with you. There is a ton of FREE resources in the guide section of Wellness4Women to get your started and even more in the VIP Membership.

3. Set aside time. Once you have found some resources that you would like to use, set aside some time each week to work on self-development. This can be an hour, two hours, or even just fifteen minutes. The important thing is to be consistent and make self-development a priority.

4. Take action. Learning is great, but it’s only beneficial if you take action and apply what you have learned. Whenever you learn something new, make sure to put it into practice. This could be trying out a new technique, changing the way you think about something, or taking new action.

5. Be patient. Self-development takes time and there is no “quick fix”. Be patient with yourself and trust that the changes you are making will have a positive impact on your life. I know you wanted it yesterday, I think I wrote the book on that but trust and it will come.

6. Celebrate your progress. As you work on self-development, you will undoubtedly make progress. When you reach a milestone, take a moment to celebrate your achievement. This could be something as simple as treating yourself to a cup of coffee or taking a day off to relax. Whatever it is, make sure to enjoy and appreciate your success

7. Setting goals. When you have a goal, you have something to work towards and this can help to keep you motivated. It is also important to be realistic when setting goals just like I talked about last week. If your goals are too unrealistic, you are likely to become frustrated and give up. So keep them simple and manageable.

8. Work on self-command. There will be times when you don’t feel like working on your goal or you just don’t seem to be making any progress. This is normal! What is important is how you deal with these moments.

9. Increase your self-belief. When you have self-doubt, it is easy to give up. Notice when it crops up and remind yourself you are capable, that you can figure this out. This is one of my go-to things to do when doubt strikes. If you are struggling with self-belief borrow someone else’s. I believe in you and that you can achieve your goals and I will hold space for you to do that.

10. Get a coach or join a community. One of the best things you can do for yourself is to get a coach or join a supportive community. A coach and community walk with you for accountability, motivation, and encouragement.

RECAP

Self-development is an ongoing process and there are no quick fixes.

It takes time, patience, and dedication to see results. However, the benefits of self-development are worth the effort.

By investing in yourself, you will not only improve your skills and knowledge but also increase your confidence, career opportunities, health etc
