Tips and tricks on how to just START! Starting out in weight loss or any journey can be daunting but it doesn't have to be.

How to get started!

The thought of making changes to your life can sometimes be overwhelming.  Thoughts can crop up like “where do I start?”, “what shall I do?”, “I don’t know what to do?  The overwhelm can then feel so crushing we revert to inaction and then comes the “I’ll start tomorrow”, “I can’t face it now”.  Our brains like to keep us safe.  It is how we are built and so, we stay in inaction and maintain the status quo.

“The first step to getting anywhere is just deciding you’re not going to stay where you are” JP Morgan

Simple right?

We just need to decide to start.  But how?

I have the secret to this, are you ready?

You start exactly right where you are!

Say what now?  Yep, you start exactly where you are!

If you are a “dieter”, how many diets have you started…on a Monday!  Where you have thrown yourself all in.  A massive declaration along the lines of “I will only eat 1000 calories and do 1 hour of cardio a day”.  What happens?  You burn out!  I have even done it before the end of the day and then declared “I am no good at dieting, I am just destined to be fat” and quit.  Taking a little bit more of my self esteem with it.  If I was lucky, I lasted a few more weeks and agonised over it every day.

The reason these past diets didn’t work for the long haul is because you didn’t meet yourself where you were at.  You did not start exactly where you are.  Rome as they say was not built in a day.

Your next question – “So what does start exactly where you are looks like?”

You have to start with a baseline.  Think of this like a “you are here” on a map.  The reason for this is until you know where here is it would be really difficult to effectively make the change, as you do not really know what you need to change to fit it with your life.

Starting with a baseline is about figuring out where you are and what you are doing so that you know exactly what needs to be changed. It may sound odd, but many of us are unaware of what we do. When my clients tell me they want to lose weight the first thing I do is help them start to “Awaken Awareness”. By starting to look at what we do, why and how we can start to work on the how.

From a weight loss point of view, I would recommend you start with a basic food planner.  Even by this small act, you can get so much information.

“Where Attention goes Energy flows; Where Intention goes Energy flows!” James Redfield

When you bring something to your conscious brain you become more engaged and if you keep it there this is where transformation happens!

So, you start with a food planner.  After completing this for a week or so you get a really good insight as to what and how much you are eating. Many of us are on autopilot and we simply are not aware of what we are doing. When you track it - and this works with anything - you have a real picture of where you are and what needs to change.

I have also done the same with time.  I would often have thoughts like I am “too busy” and I “don’t have time” but that was all rubbish.  I was just not putting my attention to the place that would get me to where I wanted to be, e.g. I could always find 30 minutes to be on social media but didn’t have time for exercise.  Can you smell the BS there?

So, the first step in change really is awareness. You have to become aware of what you are doing and exactly where you are before you can proceed forward. Keeping track for a week or two will provide you with valuable information that will support your change effort.

Until you are aware of exactly where you are - and many of us don't have a clue - it will be impossible to make the needed change.
