Intuitive Eating is a hot topic in the health and wellness world, with people touting its benefits left and right. But what exactly is Intuitive Eating, and why should you be interested?

Today I am going to share with you fifteen...one...five! incredible benefits of intuitive eating that may just help you decide to give it a go.

So first things first, Intuitive Eating is more than a way of eating, it's a lifestyle that has your overall health and well-being at its core.

I like to combine it with mindfulness and life coaching for a trio of goodies.

Various studies show women who practice Intuitive Eating lose more weight and keep it off for longer than those who use other methods, such as, calorie counting, keto or other dieting methods. They often find an overall improvement in health and well-being plus so many more life benefits. I have just 15 to share today to get you started.

1. Intuitive Eating is a healthy way of eating that helps you lose weight and stay healthy.

We are bombarded with information about what is and is not healthy it is overwhelming right? You will be full of diet mentality junk clogging up the brain cells and making you feel like crap.

Intuitive Eating at its core is about re-learning how to eat in a healthy way.

To eat in the way your body was designed to rather than the way you have learnt to over the years that do not serve you. Practicing Intuitive Eating mean unpicking old rules, stories and habits which is why you get lasting success.

For example, many people save up calories or points for a "treat", the danger with this you are more likely to overeat the "treat" as your body may not need the food but you are also creating an unhealthy relationship with food. You are teaching yourself that some foods are good and some are bad, when in fact all food is neutral.

With Intuitive Eating, you can eat all foods and you work on trusting your body to let you know when it has had enough.

In terms of food types, Intuitive Eating is not about eating "clean" or "perfectly", it's about listening to your body and eating what it needs. This may be a steak one day and a cupcake the next, as long as you are listening to your body there is no right or wrong.

It can therefore help you to say no to the yo-yo. No to yo-yo dieting so you are no longer on and off diets like it's your job.

2. People who practice Intuitive Eating often have better health overall.

You want to be healthy, be able to play with your kids with ease, be around for them when they are older, get rid of diabetes, have less back ache, less indigestion.

Intuitive Eating is important for women because it helps them achieve better health overall. Women who practice Intuitive Eating often have fewer problems with things such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and type-2 diabetes. Intuitive Eating can also help improve cholesterol levels, which can lead to a reduced risk of heart disease.

In addition to the physical benefits, Intuitive Eating can also lead to improved mental health. Women who practice Intuitive Eating often have less anxiety and depression. They also tend to have higher self-esteem and body satisfaction.

The same tools we use for weight loss can be used in all areas of life. The tools, I teach can help you manage chronic health conditions, menopause, mental health as well relationships with loved ones, work-life balance and so on.

3. Intuitive Eating can help improve your body image.

I believe in health at every size and we can work separately on body image without weight loss if this is something you want to do. I am not here to tell anybody about what they should look like but most humans have some kind of insecurity about their bodies.

One of the great things about Intuitive Eating is that it can help improve your body image. When you focus on listening to your body and eating what it wants, you will likely find that you start to like your body more. This is because you will be more in tune with what your body needs and wants, rather than trying to force it and yourself to eat in a way you do not want to or like.

Also, Intuitive Eating and especially combined with mindfulness and life coaching means you have the tools to deal with any thoughts or emotions that come up around food and your body. You become the boss of your mind, rather than your mind being the boss of you!

4. Intuitive Eating can help you develop a healthy relationship with food.

Coming back to the diet rules. If you have been on a ton of diets and worse fad quick fix diets you may have a poor relationship with food. You may feel judgement over certain foods.

With Intuitive Eating, no food is off limits and as you start work on trusting your body and mind, you form a healthier relationship with food. As such you reduce diet drama as you are not as likely to feel guilty or ashamed about eating certain things. You are also more likely to make peace with food and your body leading to a more joyful process.

As you become more aware of your body and show up for yourself daily you start to want to treat your mind and body well which can lead to you making natural shifts in your food choices rather than again feeling forced to do it.

5. Intuitive Eating can help reduce stress levels.

Stress - can't usually avoid it. A certain about is normal but it can tip as you have life's ups and downs. If you then try and 'diet' on top of this it can feel super hard super quick!

Intuitive Eating can also help reduce stress levels. When you are stressed out, it can be difficult to make healthy decisions about what to eat. However, when you are practising Intuitive Eating, you will be less likely to turn to unhealthy foods in order to cope with stress. This is because you will be more tuned in to what your body needs and wants, rather than relying on food as a way to cope with stress.

6. Intuitive Eating can help improve digestion.

When I weighed 220 I had terrible indigestion. Tablets, cameras down the old tubes the works but as I started to lose my weight and eat differently I had less indigestion, less bloating etc.

Why? because Intuitive Eating is that it can help improve digestion. When you eat intuitively, you are encouraged to take joy from your food to eat slower and chew your food properly. This can help reduce problems such as constipation and diarrhoea.

Mindfulness and life coaching can also help you develop a relationship with your food beyond just the eating. You start to see food as fuel and nourishment for your body which can lead to you making more intuitive choices around what to eat that suit your body.

You can become aware of what sits well with your stomach or not and then step into action as to whether you want to keep it or not. Alternatively, you may start to notice certain combinations do not sit well or that eating at night impacts your digestion etc.

7. Intuitive Eating can help reduce cravings.

Food cravings and urges happen. No matter what food plan you follow they will come up. However, the biggest thing hands down that will give me a craving is telling myself I can't have it!

Intuitive Eating can also help reduce cravings for unhealthy foods. When you are not constantly trying to count calories or restrict yourself from certain foods, you will likely find that you no longer crave those unhealthy foods as much as before. This is because your body will no longer be trying to tell you that it needs those foods in order to survive. Effectively every time you say to yourself you "cannot" have something you are sending a panic signal to your brain. Normalising the food rather than having it categorised as good and bad means you get fewer cravings as you can have it whenever you want.

8. Intuitive Eating can help boost energy levels.

I get it, you are chasing around at work, with your family, and your partner. You will have days when you are on your knees!

Another benefit of Intuitive Eating is that it can help boost energy levels. When you are not constantly worrying about what you are going to eat next or feeling guilty about eating certain foods, you will likely find that you have more energy. This is because your body will be able to focus on other things, such as processing food and repairing cells.

Also by listening to your body and looking at what is going on in your life as to why you are feeling run down you can start to make other shifts, such as, getting more sleep, drinking more water or taking a multivitamin. Maybe you may make other lifestyle shifts like changing jobs, working hours, saying no to things, or starting an exercise regime. All of these things can lead to increased energy levels.

9. Intuitive Eating can help improve sleep quality.

You lead a busy life, it can be difficult to switch off after a busy day. Plus if your food is not in line with your body your digestion can impact your sleep too.

When you are not constantly thinking about food or worrying about what you ate during the day, eating foods that suit your body at times that suit your body you sleep better at night.

Lifestyle-wise, you can start to gather awareness over what impacts your sleep, watching TV too late, disagreements with partners, and worrying about children. With mindfulness and life coaching, you can lessen these also.

The result? Your body will be able to relax and recharge properly.

10. Intuitive Eating can help improve skin health.

Skin is a funny one. Can be impacted by a number of things.

When you are not constantly stressing about food and life, eating well and staying hydrated, you will likely find that your skin clears up and looks better. You are giving your body a chance once more to focus on other things, such as getting rid of toxins and repairing cells.

Your body ultimately can become more balanced the more in tune you get.

11. Intuitive Eating can help reduce the risk of developing disordered eating and or can relieve disordered eating.

A delicate subject this one but an important one. Dieting for some can be toxic. Intuitive eating can help those who have suffered from eating disorders like addiction, binge eating or for those who have perhaps had eating disorders like bulimia etc in the past. This is of course with medical support if needed.

When you are not constantly dieting or restricting yourself from certain foods, you will be less likely to develop an unhealthy relationship with food.

The mindfulness and life coaching elements of it help you to process thoughts and feelings in a way that is more serving.

The result? A better relationship with life, food, you, and your body.

12. Intuitive Eating makes life more joyful

Who doesn't want joy! Now I am not promising permanent sunshine, rainbows and unicorns. As a friend pointed out to me today how would you know what joy felt like if you did not have the lows?

But

Intuitive Eating makes life and weight loss more joyful because you start to reduce the worry around food or dieting. When you are not constantly restricting yourself or feeling guilty about what you eat, you have more time to enjoy other things in life. Enjoy life and you are less likely to emotionally eat especially as it can help improve mental health, self-esteem, and reduce stress levels which again all bring you joy!

The other reason it is great is that you fit it to your life aka more joy.

No more feeling restricted. Want to eat the same food as your family, no problem. Worried that you are going to quit your diet again...no way not when you keep it simple!

13. Intuitive Eating can help improve your self-esteem.

Confidence, self-esteem again are common problems regardless of weight, shape or body size but dieting is notorious for knocking confidence as it has its ups and downs. Apart from saying this is normal most diets do not give you the tools to build you up.

Intuitive Eating can help improve self-esteem because it allows you to focus on your body's natural cues instead of listening to societal pressures. When you are not constantly trying to lose weight or following diets, you will likely find that you feel better about yourself. It gives you a gentle and easy way to show up for yourself daily which in turn helps increase self-esteem.

Self-love and care are important components to intuitive eating, which is why it can be so beneficial for those struggling with their self-esteem. When you love and accept yourself, you are more likely to make choices that are in line with your values and that will help you reach your goals.

14. Intuitive Eating allows you to eat the foods you love without feeling guilty.

Tell me in the chat if you have food guilt? I sometimes still have it but hardly ever due to the work I have done.

I took my mentor seriously when she said eat what you want.

No foods are off limits, it can take a while to let go of the diet guilt but when you do it is magical. You can start to eat all the foods you love without feeling guilty. The method is so simple, all you have to do is listen, to be more aware of your body. To be present with life and what is going on in your weight loss.

15. Intuitive Eating can teach you how to trust your own body signals again.

Our bodies are confusing at times, especially if you have additional conditions, hormone issues etc which I talk about a lot.

One of the key parts of Intuitive Eating is not starting eating until you physically need food and stopping eating when you are satisfied. This helps to retrain your body to trust its own hunger and satiety signals again. This is an important skill to have as it can help you avoid emotional eating and overeating. It is more than that though as you build up trust with your body you build up trust with yourself in more areas of life. Your confidence soars and you feel more in control.

This said sometimes you can have conditions like Hashimoto's where you signals are out of wack but with Intuitive Eating you start to figure it out.

BONUS:

Intuitive Eating can be done anywhere, anytime, by anyone with any type of food.

This is the real cherry on the top!

You do not need to be at a certain place or have special foods to intuitively eat. You can eat anywhere, anytime, with anyone and with any type of food. You can eat on any type of budget and with any type of food taste. So you do not have to worry when you are going out, you do not have to worry if you are not the best cook, on a tight budget. This again makes it easy to follow and sustainable in the long term as you can flex it to your life and needs.
